Ericeira is a picturesque fishing village. One would have to go a long way to better the magnificent fish restaurants which are to be found in abundance, some right up against the sea You can watch the colourful fishing boats bringing in their daily catch to the harbour. It is a place on the move and tourists eare now not only discovering just how beautiful it is but are buying properties and settling in Ericeira in large numbers. The original centre of the village has almost remained unchanged over the centuries, preserving the harmony of its narrow cobbled streets , whitewashed houses and traditional facades. The hospitality of the people, as in all parts of Portugal is legendary. The beaches are varied and quite beautiful. Go to one of the many beach restaurants abutting the sea , enjoy an ice cold drink with your sardines, or even a lobster or shellfish and just watch the world stroll by whilst the sun streams down aided by the gentlest of breezes. Ericeira is a surfers dream. It is the venue for one of the world surfing championships. As a result there are many surfing schools so many ardent fans of the sport swarm in to the village to enjoy the waves. Many of the beaches are dwarfed by majestic cliffs, a hikers paradise. There are many outlying villages surrounding Ericeira, some with strong rural traditions and but a cycle ride away. In summation Ericeira is an escapists dream. Warm sunshine, cool sea breezes, tranquil people, magnificent views and food out of this world. Those lucky enough to have discovered this village nearly always return.
