General Description | |
St Andrew's Hotel lies slightly above the centre of Nuwara Eliya, alongside the golf course - suitably so for a hotel of such a famous golfing name. Nuwara Eliya, an old colonial hill station, lies more than 6,000 feet above sea level, a town rich in tea plantations and cradled amidst misty mountains. St Andrew's is an excellent base for exploring the delights of Sri Lanka's spectacular hill country. This stately Tudor-style colonial mansion, built in the latter part of the 19th century, fits the Nuwara Eliya pattern by determinedly preserving the feel of a bygone age. Standing alongside imposing pine trees, it has a rather stern exterior. But inside is a world of open fires, candlelit dinners and a well-stocked wine cellar. Staff are also praised for their friendliness. Many of the 52 rooms, including 12 suites or family rooms, have quaint period furniture. All have attached bathrooms. Each room offers a view of the distant mountains and lush vegetation-clad hills. Good-sized rooms include telephone, tv and minibar and antique beds (not mattresses!) to add to the old-time appeal. Old Course restaurant, wood-panelled bar, smoking and cocktail rooms. Those not particularly taken by cosy traditionalism may feel that some rooms would benefit from a sharpening up; others remain blissfully content. As well as the nearby golf course, snooker and table tennis is available. Fax and IDD facilities, safety lockers, children's playroom. Heaters on request, doctor on call, laundry, boutique. Nature treks, pony rides, birdwatching and scenic tours arranged. | |
