General Description | |
Although peacefully tucked away in the countryside the location is within five miles of Suffolk's Heritage Coast - Dunwich five miles, six miles to Walberswick and eight miles to Southwold. Good A-road links are close by if you wish to travel further afield during your stay, or unwind by exploring the delightful country lanes and local footpaths. Ideal as a base for cycling and walking holidays. Thorington is a scattered community with a wonderful ancient church which is one of only about forty round tower Suffolk churches. The farm stands on high ground and is reached by a half mile access track. This is an arable farm but there are also productive beehives plus free-range chickens, geese and ducks. In the surrounding open countryside there live a wealth of birds and wildlife - hares, deer, foxes and (of course) rabbits are often to be seen near the farm buildings. Pets are not accepted but children are welcome - parents should be aware that this is a working farm and supervision is necessary. The area around Thorington is glorious east Suffolk countryside criss-crossed by public footpaths and with nature reserves, wildlife-rich marshes, rivers, commons and heathlands to explore. The local lanes are a delight for cyclists. Within ten miles is the Suffolk Heritage Coast. Southwold is a delightful unspoilt, but busy, seaside resort with a its beach, pier, working lighthouse and jaunty beach huts. Walberswick and Dunwich are seaside villages where ancient ruins tell of more prosperous times. The National Trust own heathland at Dunwich cliffs where you can watch for porpoises and seals from the lookout. Take your binoculars to visit the RSPB Minsmere Reserve, less than a twenty minute drive away. | |
