The George Inn is found just 6 miles south of the Roman city of Bath, off the A36. An imposing building oozing with history and tales to be told. The building you see today was built by the Carthusian monks from nearby Hinton Priory to accommodate all the travellers and merchants arriving for the annual wool fairs that were held here in the village from the late 13th century. During the 17th century, there were many famous visitors to The George Inn, two of whom were Samuel Pepys and The Duke of Monmouth. The Duke himself the illegitimate son of Charles II headed a rebellion against King James II and used The George as his headquarters after his retreat from Bath on the 26th June 1685. Sadly in the 18th century the prosperity of Norton St Philip declined but the tourist route to Bath ensured The George continued to trade. By the 19th century The George had become well known as an historic Inn and is featured in many watercolours, engravings & photographs. The George Inn has also been used in many films and period dramas, recently it has been seen in “The Remains of the Day” & “The Canterbury Tales”, also in the TV serialisations of “Persuasion” & “Moll Flanders”. Centrally, it sports a delightful enclosed courtyard with wooden gallery, and the formal dining areas are housed in the old storage ranges built for the linen and cloth sold at all the markets on the mead. Our function room is located in 'the Dungeon' – a fabulous stone room below street level with alcoves full of pewter plates & a lovely intimate feel. A group of up to 20 can dine in privacy or at other times it serves to supplement the bar space for drop-in guests. The George is a popular venue for groups of up to 14 to stay and have a get-together in the one place. What more could you need? - accommodation, good food and fine ales all at your fingertips - and only miles from Bath where you can explore during the day, or such tourist sites as Longleat, Farleigh Hungerford & Bradford on Avon. | |
