Church House Inn is at the centre of the quaint hamlet of Holne, just 4 miles from Ashburton. Set on the south-eastern slopes of Dartmoor, a community has existed here since the 11th century. Today a population of around 250 people live in this idyllic setting. It is the only Church House Inn within the boundary of Dartmoor National Park. Stonemasons building The Church of St Mary the Virgin, next door, built the Inn in 1329 to provide board and lodgings, plus ales of course for themselves. A hollow yew tree in the churchyard, planted around 1300, exists today. Holne is famous as the birthplace of Charles Kingsley, author of Water Babies and Westward Ho!During Victorian times the Church House Inn was a popular holiday destination. The recently discovered visitor's book, dating from 1800, clearly shows the great pleasure guests enjoyed during their stay. Today visitors arrive from all parts of the globe, such is the fame of this historic Inn. Visitors come to enjoy the rugged Dartmoor scenery and often to engage in the various leisure pursuits available.
