From the 18th century, The Angel hotel was originally known as the Nags Head. It is quite possibly the oldest surviving hotel in the town and was an important posting house during the coaching days. There was a mail coach service and wagon service for heavy goods operated from the premises, the rear of the hotel, was originally home to the out buildings and stables. During the 19th century beer was produced and sold at the rear of the premises, also around 1808 the hotel was registered as an Excise office where makers of a wide range of goods were required to pay their duties.
