The hotel is just 5 miles from the centre of Basingstoke. With quick and easy access to both the M3 and M4 motorways, its location is ideal for business and leisure travellers alike. There is an ample free car park and a great beer garden. There is always a warm welcome with well known pub classics and a wide range of drinks. The semi-rural village of Oakley sits on the outskirts of Basingstoke, Hampshire. In the centre of the village is a duck pond surrounded by attractive thatched houses and has picturesque countryside on its doorstep. And the place is not without its ancient history too - some archaeologists consider Oakley to be the site of the Christian Saxon King Ethelwulf's (father of Alfred the Great) victory over the pagan Danes in 85AD. The nearby town of Basingstoke also has a few tales to tell. It's mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and (contrary to popular belief of it being a 'New Town') started life as a Saxon village, growing into a market town. In 1214, market day was fixed by royal charter to take place on a Wednesday and has been so ever since. Basingstoke remained a small market town until the 1950s. In the 1960s the town was rapidly expanded to accommodate part of the London 'overspill' under the Greater London Plan of 1944. | |
