The town dates back to 674, when Saint Philibert of Jumieges arrived and founded a monastery. The 12th-century castle called the Chateau de Noirmoutier now houses the Noirmoutier Museum. There are numerous other historic buildings, several named for John Cornelius Jacobsen, who built the town’s dam in 1812, allowing the development of salt marshes and a channel to access the port.
