In 1142 the South Zealand magnate Asser Rig founded a monastery at the lake Soroe Soe. His son Bishop Absalon extended the monastery; so that it soon became the largest and richest in Northern Europe. Moreover; the town surrounding the monastery became an important town in the Middle Ages. For centuries; the Danish kings paid much attention to the monastery; and therefore not only Bishop Absalons but also several other Danish kings graves are to be found in the monastery church today. One of the most famous chronicles of Denmarks history; Saxos Danmarkskroenike; has been written in Soroe Monastery.
Hotel Postgaarden has been situated here for 330 years in the middle of the street Storgade in the old Zealand market town - close to Klosterport; Soroe Akademi and the lake. Thanks to a gentle renovation it has been possible to combine historic charm with the demands to a hotel of the present time. You will notice this already when you check in in the cosy lounge of the hotel from which there is direct access to the restaurant and a room with an open fireplace. Also in the restaurant of the hotel modern ideas and thoughts form a synthesis with tradition; soul and atmosphere. The menu comprises both traditional open sandwiches; exiting starters such as pickled salmon and substantial beefsteaks. The motto of Hotel Postgaarden is to be a hotel where you not only sleep; but which you feel like visiting again and can recommend to others. |
