Den Gamle Kro is situated in the old South Jutland castle town Gram where it is easy to sense the presence of history. The magnificent castle Gram Slot gives evidence of the excellent location of Gram next to a ford. In former times it was necessary to travel this way if you wanted to transport goods from Haderslev to Ribe as it was the shortest distance between the Baltic and the North Sea. It became interesting to build and own a castle here in order to control this important traffic. The history of the castle can be traced way back to 1232 but the present red-brick three-winged main building has been built during the period of three centuries from the 1400s to the 1600s. Den Gamle Kro was built in 1855 and during more than 150 years it has been gently renovated and extended. Today the inn appears as a cosy and modern inn where the 4th generation of innkeepers is responsible for the cuisine and provides for the guests culinary wellbeing. The banqueting rooms are suited for up to 120 persons in the same room and the inn also provides both premises and a good atmosphere for meetings- courses and conferences. Right opposite the inn there is a 10 acres large castle park - which is open to the public the whole year. Only a few kilometres from the inn you will find the clay pit Gram Lergrav. Here you can see fossils of animals which lived more than 6 million years ago. |
