Antica Locanda Sturion is located in the heart of Venice at only two minutes walking distance from the Rialto bridge and only 15 minutes from Saint Marks' square either by waterbus or foot. Overlooking the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge, the Locanda welcomes you to elegant rooms decorated in classic Venetian style, some overlooking the narrow street Calle del Sturion, some the venitian rooftops and two large family rooms in the front overlooking the Grand Canal. Hotel Sturion is first heard of towards the end of the 13th century, where above the arch at Calle dello Sturion and overlooking the Grand Canal was the House with the same name which the Doge of Venice had specifically built to suit the comfort of foreign merchants taking their goods to the Market of Rialto. Refurbished in the 14th century, the hotel reached the peak of its renown in the 15th century when celebrated navigators and traders and even seven Ambassadors from Friuli were among its guests. In 1494, Vittore Carpaccio in his painting The Miracle of the Cross, which can be seen at the Academy. The inn was continually mentioned in a variety of historical texts through the end of the 18th century. It then became the private home of a wealthy Venetian family. In the 1950s, the inn resurfaced in the same place and with the same foundations that had seen seven hundred years of the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia's history. | |
