General Description

Hotel Aktea Via Falcone e BorsellinoThe Aktea hotel is conveniently located at the centre of Marina Lunga bay, close to the harbour and town centre of Lipari. Up until the 19th century, Marina Lunga (meaning “long marine”) was known as Marine of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the sailors and fishermen, whose worship succeeded the pagan Poseidon. In the religion of ancient Greece, the sea belonged to the Signoria of Nereus, who ruled over it with the help of the Nereid nymphs, each of whom had a name that recalled either their specific function in the court of Nereus, a favourite place, or another distinctive feature. In Greek mythology, Aktea was one of the hundred daughters of Nereus, a deity of the PreOlympic generation, preceding Zeus, Apollo and Poseidon. Aktea is the nymph of the shore, inhabitant of the coast. On Lipari, the shore par excellence was the Marina Lunga bay due to its extensive beach close to the fortified area where the ancient Greeks lived, and located on the most shielded part of the island. The name Aktea itself is directly related to this coastline as she was worshiped by the sailors and fishermen of Lipari. We hope that Aktea becomes synonymous of a pleasant journey and stay, in that new “Ulysses travellers” may come to discover the beauty and rich history of this Aeolian Archipelago.
