General Description | |
Railson House is an elegant Georgian House built in 1820 as a farmhouse. Situated in the North East coastal village of Seahouses, within easy walking distance of the working fishing harbour, flanked on either side by miles of golden sandy beaches and outstanding natural beauty. Northumberland is steeped in history, with many Roman remains, Medieval castles and fine houses. For the active visitor there are some picturesque and challenging golf courses, diving, riding, bird watching, walking, sailing and fishing, all within a 25-mile radius. The house is only a few minutes walk to the hustle and bustle of the harbour area where there are a variety of pubs & restaurants for the hungry and thirsty visitor, just the tonic after a busy day exploring the beautiful Northumbrian countryside. The house still shows many of its original features and enjoys a beautiful setting with a walled garden to the rear for our guests to enjoy at their leisure. All our rooms are ensuite, offering a good level of comfort, including hot drinks tray and television in every room. Railston Cottage, just behind Railston House, was originally built (circa 1820) by John Railston Esq., a local seed and grain merchant. It was originally built to store his horse drawn coach when not in use. The floor above the coach house was, it is believed, where the coachman/gardener and his family lived. The building was converted to full accommodation in 1939 to billet troops during World War II. The house had not been upgraded in any major way since then, until fully refurbished in 2009 to create a quality, comfortable holiday cottage. | |
