Fussen is best known for St. Mang's Abbey (called Kloster Sankt Mang Fussen in German), a former Benedictine monastery that was founded in the 9th century. Today it houses the Fussen Town Museum. In the crypt of the Basilica of St. Mang you can see the oldest Fresco in Germany, dating back to approx. the year 980. The High Castle above Fussen serves as a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Collections of Paintings. From Fussen it’s a short bus ride or drive to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein), the Hohenschwangau Castle (Schloss Hohenschwangau, or High Swan County Palace), and the Wieskirche, the pilgrimage church of Wies, considered a rococo masterpiece. Fussen is the town farthest south on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) through southern Germany. | |
