 The Hotel Stadtkrug enjoys a superb location right on the pedestrianised Linzergasse, in the heart of the old town of Salzburg, only a couple of steps away from the River Salzach, and just across the bridge from the Getreidegasse, the Fortress and the Cathedrals. This hotel is housed in a building that is over 700 years old, and has been lovingly restored, enabling guests to enjoy all the home comforts you'd expect in a four star hotel, within ancient walls.
All rooms are en suite, most with shower (if you want a bathtub, opt for a luxury room), in newly refitted bathrooms. The furnishings are in the traditional Austrian style, with antique pieces adding to the historical effect, yet rooms are bright and clean, with fresh paint and new laminate floors adding to their freshness. The rooms are not airconditioned, but even in the height of summer remain cool due to their extremely thick ancient walls. Original features such as stone archways and wooden ceilings add to the impression that you're staying somewhere really special. All rooms have cable TV, telephone and minibar.
A plentiful buffet breakfast with hot and cold food is served in the hotel's own restaurant, which in itself is renowned in the city, and is well worth a visit. It serves traditional Austrian specialities with an up to date twist, and features home grown beef (the hoteliers keep their cows just 20 mins away up the road!) and an ample selection of vegetarian options, which is refreshingly unusual for this city. The hotel also has a rooftop garden which nestles between the ancient buildings and the craggy rocks of the Kapuzinerberg. Enjoy lunch out here in the summer, in the quiet greenery, with views over the rooftops and spires of the Old Town.
Although the hotel is located in the pedestrianised area, you may drive up to the front door when you arrive to deposit your luggage. Parking is available at the nearby Linzergasse public garage, only a few hundred metres away, or at Mirabellplatz underground carpark.
It's a small hotel with a cosy, comfortable feel, as it's family-run. It may not have all the facilities of a large international chain but it certainly benefits from a warmth and elegance that is hard to match. The Stadtkrug has only 35 rooms so please book early to avoid disappointment.
