The Liwa Oasis is the birth place of the ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In 1793, the ruling family of the Abu Dhabi Emirate, Al Nahyan, moved their residence from Liwa to Abu Dhabi. The 39 villages that surround the oasis still provide a glimpse into the traditional life style of the inhabitants of the region. A historic fort which is located in one corner of the Oasis stands testimony to this by gone era.
